One of my fondest memories as a child was attending a monthly gaming event at a senior citizen center in Saint Peters, called Game Fest. This event was organized by a passionate man named Powel Hall. Through his investment in the community and his love for gaming, he created a space for people to explore their hobbies, make friends, and have lots of fun.
I am eternally grateful for what this man created nearly 30 years ago. If it wasn’t for Game Fest I would have missed out on some of the greatest friendships of my life. I might not have discovered the vast array of amazing games I’ve played, and I wouldn’t have become the man I am today.
This event was so cool. It was where I first witnessed Car Wars. Powel created hundreds of customized Hot Wheels that were loaded up with weapons to look like they were ready for battle. He also created variants of each car to look like they were destroyed. Another guy brought a massive collection of Star Trek miniatures and played an epic Star Fleet Battles game. It was how I discovered Battle Tech and my favorite game of all time Vampire the Masquerade.
The environment was welcoming, inviting and a treasure trove of pure imagination. As a result, it created a warm place in my heart. As I sit here reflecting on my childhood it reveals the impact one person can have. I haven’t spoken to this guy in probably 15 years, and I bet we’ve had less than 30 minutes of total conversation, yet he was one of the most powerful positive influences of my childhood.
I think this is something we should all reflect on, especially when we feel like our actions seem meaningless and insignificant. You don’t realize it, but when you pursue your passions and have the confidence to show off your imagination, it inspires those around you. It encourages them to do the same, and in many ways, even if you never see it, it opens the door for them to feel great in wonderful ways.
